PROJECT
Fujisawa Beach Clean
The Fujisawa Beach Cleaning Project started in 2009 as a tangible way in which to bring communities together to protect and revitalize our local coast.
Large Biannual Beach Cleanups

The Project involves a large-scale, biannual beach, park, and jinja cleanups. The cleanups are held in Spring (Earth Day) and Fall (International Coastal Cleanup Campaign) on the Fujisawa Enoshima coast in Shonan. These family-friendly beach cleanups include collecting data on marine debris, and a networking aperitif afterward.

The Project is endorsed by Fujisawa City Tourism Office, Kanagawa Prefectural Coastal Foundation, Japan Environmental Action Network, and Ocean Conservancy.

The Project has evolved to include three key pillars:

1. Volunteering:

A family-friendly project in which corporate volunteers and their families join together with local students and members of the community to remove ocean-bound and floating debris.

2. Building Awareness with Public Education :
Citizen Science: Volunteers become citizen scientists for the day. They learn about our impact and gain insight into the different kinds of debris collected, as they do on-site surveys. This data is included in national and international reports on the state of the marine ecosystem.

Expo Mer Fujisawa: Expo Mer Fujisawa builds on the power of art as a way to invite conversation and incite change around the issues of systemic pollution in the marine environment. Read more
Public Education Webinars: As a part of Expo Mer Fujisawa, we conduct a series of themed public education webinars. Guest speakers share their experiences, expertise on issues, and solutions related to our roles in the conservation of the ocean. Read More

3. Reconnecting to the Marine Environment:

Clean S.E.A.: Our Clean Sailing Experience Activity (S.E.A.) uses sailing as a way to help participants to reconnect and get closer to the natural marine environment, to understand the beauty and fragility of this ecosystem, remove floating debris, and increase the number of fans for this leisure sport.

Youth Program Development

We, at SEGO, aim to increase youth engagement through our Fujisawa Beach Clean Youth Program. Along with the beach cleanups, we are planning to introduce Ocean Science Education programs for students and teachers. The goal of the program is to encourage global citizenship among the youth by giving students from international and local schools a chance to do something good together. We are currently seeking corporate partners and sponsors for that.
